Wide Area Traac Modeling: from Poisson to Self-similarity
نویسنده
چکیده
Telephone networks can be well modeled using an exponential distribution because they show a relatively homogeneous and predictable behavior over large time scales. In contrast to these circuit-switched networks the Internet has very diierent characteristics. At rst people tried to create simulations of this global network with the same tools that were used before, but soon realized that its traac was much more variable over time. Therefore , a new model had to be developed that could cope with this special behavior. Other distributions are now used in place of Poisson which more adequately reeect the packet-switched, highly dynamic Internet.

A MODEL FOR SELF - SIMILAR ETHERNET LAN TRAFFIC : DESIGN , IMPLEMENTATION , ANDPERFORMANCE IMPLICATIONSYing
This paper presents a synthetic workload model that is capable of modeling self-similar Ethernet traac. The design of the model is presented, along with a brief description of its implementation in SimKit, a C ++-based simulation interface to support eecient parallel simulation on Shared Memory TimeWarp (SMTW). Preliminary simulation results are presented comparing the cell loss and cell delay ...
متن کاملSelf - Similarity in World Wide Web Tra c : Evidence and Possible
Recently the notion of self-similarity has been shown to apply to wide-area and local-area network traac. In this paper we show evidence that the subset of network traac that is due to World Wide Web transfers can show characteristics that are consistent with self-similarity, and we present a hypothesized explanation for that self-similarity. Using a set of traces of actual user executions of N...
متن کاملPoint Process Approaches to the Modelingand Analysis of Self - Similar Tra c { Part I : Model
We propose four fractal point processes (FPPs) as novel approaches to modeling and analyzing various types of self-similar traac: the fractal renewal process (FRP), the superposition of several fractal renewal processes (Sup-FRP), the fractal-shot-noise-driven Poisson process (FSNDP), and the fractal-binomial-noise-driven Poisson process (FBNDP). These models fall into two classes depending on ...
متن کاملSelf - Similarity Through High - Variability :
| A number of recent empirical studies of traf-c measurements from a variety of working packet networks have convincingly demonstrated that actual network traac is self-similar or long-range dependent in nature (i.e., bursty over a wide range of time scales) { in sharp contrast to commonly made traac modeling assumptions. In this paper, we provide a plausible physical explanation for the occurr...
متن کاملIs Network Traac Self-similar or Multifractal?
This note addresses the question of whether self-similar processes are suucient to model packet network traac, or whether a broader class of multifractal processes is needed. By using the absolute moments of aggregate traac measurements , we conclude that measured local-area network (LAN) and wide-area network (WAN) traac traces, with the sample means subtracted, are well modelled by random pro...
